January 6 & 27, 2012 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Protecting Children on the Internet

We will be discussing the dangers of the internet. We will show you how to teach your children online security basics, how to block specific websites and why it is important to know their passwords.

January 9 & 11, 2012 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Talking to your doctor

We will teach you what to bring to your first doctor’s visit, and whether or not you should take an interpreter with you. We will be discussing the importance and how to do a follow up with your doctor and which questions you should be asking your doctor.

January 17, 2012 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Settlement.Org

Anne-Marie McGregor the OCASI Marketing Senior Coordinator wil come to Adult Language and Learning to demonstrate how to use Settlement.org.

January 23 & 25, 2012 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Counseling Services in Chatham-Kent

We will be discussing what counselling is, what services are available and what the related costs could be. Find out if you are eligible to receive counselling.

January 25, 2012 (6:00 pm - 8:00 pm): Family Literacy Night

Join us for fun, fun, fun. We will be celebrating Family Literacy Day with games, and activities that will help to promote literacy. We will have activities for the whole family. Don’t miss out on a night of fun for everyone.

We will be discovering everything there is to do in Chatham-Kent; how to get to these activities and we will show you all the Seasonal Fun there is to do for you and your family without having to leave Chatham-Kent.

We will discover what the parenting issues are in Canada. We will see why communication is so important and vital in any family and when is the right time to talk to your children about certain issues.

December 6, 2011 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Social Housing

Jennifer Johns from Social Housing will be coming to talk about what social housing is; how to apply for social housing and what the tenant and landlord rights are.

December 9 & 12, 2011 (9:45 am - 10:45 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Service Canada

Learn what services Service Canada provides, how to apply for them and if you are eligible for their services.

December 13, 2011 (9:45 am - 12:30 am) Immigrant and Newcomer Information Session: Blood Pressure Clinic

Sonia Teeuwen RN from the Chatham Kent Community Health Centre will come to our Centre to run a Blood Pressure Clinic. With your consent she will be taking your blood pressure and she wil also be discussing the causes, symptoms and complication of having a high blood pressure.

Every Tuesday, November 1 to December 20, 2011 (6:00 pm -8:00 pm) Canadian Citizenship Preparation Workshop:

Adult Language and Learning will once again be hosting their Canadian Citizenship Preparation Workshop every Tuesday night from November 1 to December 20, 2011. If your Citizenship Test is approaching fast and you’re not quite sure if you are ready to pass it, then this workshop is for you. If you have difficulty understanding the Citizenship Book, then this workshop is for you. Don’t delay, call now to register. We will have childcare available for those who are eligible. Find out what the standard auto insurance policy is and where you can purchase auto insurance. Learn how the insurance rates are set and how to save money on your auto insurance.

October 4 - December 13, 2011 Adult Language and Learning Presents: Mother Goose

Adult Language and Learning in partnership with the Ontario Early Years Center present the Parent-Child Mother Goose Program for Newcomer Parents. This program will be held every Tuesday from Oct. 4 to the 13 of December from 1:30 - 2:30 pm. Peter Jones the Branch Coordinator from the Canadian Diabetes Association in Chatham-Kent will be at our centre to speak about Diabetes. He will discuss the causes of diabetes, the symptoms and how to prevent yourself from becoming a diabetic.

Learn what organizations offer food services and who can qualify to recieve this help. Learn where they are located and what is offered. We will aslo be discussing the pro’s and con’s.
